After parting ways with Jared McCain in a mid-season trade, the Philadelphia 76ers needed some reinforcements in the backcourt. They selected Labaron Philon Jr. from Alabama, one of the most impressive guards in college basketball in the 2025-26 season.
Philon is a proven scorer, as he averaged 22 points at Alabama. Now that he is with the 76ers, he could be the spark off the bench they need to replace McCain, who the previous front office traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder as a "sell high" opportunity.
Labaron Philon Jr. is ready to play a crucial role for the 76ers
Philon is an awesome prospect that the 76ers will want to see as one of their go-to guards. Of course, Tyrese Maxey is still the main man in the backcourt, but Philon could be his backup or even playing alongside him from time to time.
The incoming rookie is a smaller player listed at 6'4" in shoes, but that might not matter if his role is mainly as a spark plug on offense. He will get his shots up while also providing some playmaking in place of Maxey.

That kind of role is what McCain used to play for the 76ers, but the previous front office parted ways with him in a trade. Now, it seems the new front office wants to remedy the issues that the trade gave to Philly, so Philon is the answer.
Philon himself seems confident about his role moving forward with the 76ers. That is a good sign because it looks like he is committed to helping the team improve.
"It's special, being able to have such a great roster and then add such a key piece like me that can make the game easier for others," Philon said about his potential role with the 76ers in the 2026-27 season.
Philon is still quite young at 20, but it seems that he is ready for the spotlight. Playing for the 76ers can be quite challenging, but it looks like he is embracing the pressure, and he will want to contribute as soon as he can.
