Angsty Los Angeles officials are worried that President Donald Trump will trigger boycotts of the 2028 Summer Olympics, insisting the city needs a “Plan B” — despite there being no sign of any pushback to the international sporting event.
At a Monday meeting, City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson fretted that countries in Europe and elsewhere could refuse to compete because of Trump and alluded to “human rights” concerns following the fatal shooting of a nurse in Minneapolis by federal agents.
“It’s hard to miss it. The situation with the national government in this country makes human rights an even more important question than it would ordinarily be,” Harris-Dawson said, per a report in The Sports Examiner.
“I noticed at least three reports of countries discussing in a formal way – I mean, big countries like Germany, France – discussing boycotting FIFA [2026 World Cup], because of the actions of the U.S. around Greenland or whatever, so we have a national government who’s setting the stage for an environment where we can have a serious boycott,” Harris-Dawson added.

Councilmember Monica Rodriguez called the FIFA discussions “just a forewarning,”
“We need to have a Plan B … We could be talking about a lot more irreparable harm financially,” she said.
LA28 Chief Operating Officer John Harper dismissed the concerns of a boycott, saying there are “no indications” that boycotts would thwart the event.
“We’ve had no discussions with the IOC, no indications that that is going to be a concern here, but obviously, we’ll continue to work with the IOC and the [International Paralympic Committee] as they drive towards 2028,” said John Harper. “But all indications are that we’re looking forward to welcoming the world, all 206 nations of all the NOCs represented in 2028.”
Outspoken council Member Monica Rodriguez claimed this month that President Trump’s Olympics Task Force could cause a ‘tragedy’ like the death of Minnesota activist Renee Good.

“Given the ICE activities, one of my concerns is that there is going to be a federal task force tied to 2028,” said Rodriguez, a San Fernando Valley Dem.
The White House slammed the suggestion that they would use the Olympics to stage ICE raids.
President Trump told The California Post he’s confident that Los Angeles can pull off the summer 2028 Olympics – with the help of the US military, which he said could help “clean up the place.”
“I think they can, but they have to have the security of the military, and it’ll be great,” Trump said in an exclusive Oval Office interview on Friday.
