Kyle Schwarber makes 61-year Phillies history in All-Star Game victory

It didn't look like it would be Kyle Schwarber's night initially in the 95th Major League Baseball All-Star Game. But the Philadelphia Phillies star stole the show late.

Schwarber went 0-for-2 with a walk in the game itself, and the National League blew what was once a 6-0 lead to send the game to a home run derby swing-off in lieu of extra innings. But that's when the Schwarbombs entered the equation.

Players each got three swings to hit as many home runs as possible, and Schwarber came up with the NL trailing 3-1. But because Schwarber is Schwarber, he left the batter's box a perfect 3-for-3, clinching the victory once Tampa Bay Rays' slugger Jonathan Aranda went scoreless.

That earned Schwarber an unprecedented All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award, the first by a Phillies player since Johnny Callison in 1964 and presumably the first ever by a position player who didn't record a hit in the game itself.

“There's a lot of guys who are way more deserving of this award,” Schwarber said, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. “I’m just happy that we get a win with the National League and it's going to come home with us to Philly.”

Schwarber not only went perfect in the swing-off, but he did so with a different bat than he used in the game. In the ninth inning, he got sawed off by Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman, inducing a weak lineout to third base.

“Frickin' broke my bat in the ninth off a 100-mile-an-hour sinker,” Schwarber said, per Feinsand. “Went up, got the new bat, waited my turn.”

And while the three home runs don't count towards Schwarber's season total, he's still fifth in all of baseball with 30.

It was an incredible night in Atlanta, so it was fitting that in the home park of one of the Phillies' top rivals, Schwarber took over, as he has done during regulation innings so many times before.
