Kraken's Bobby McMann gets $21.2 million contract update after Maple Leafs trade

2 hours ago 3

The Seattle Kraken traded for Bobby McMann with aspirations of making noise in the playoffs, but that didn't happen.

They only had a chance to get McMann because he was on an expiring contract, making him expendable to the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs. Now, though, that means that McMann is a free agent.

He'll be one of the more intriguing players available. It's not a great forward pool in free agency, for starters.

McMann is also a bit of a late bloomer who has shown he certainly belongs in a solid NHL role on the wing.

What will that be worth? Probably a pretty good payday.

Bobby McMann contract projection

McMann could earn more than $5 million per year on a new deal.

The Athletic's Chris Johnston projects him for a four-year deal at $5.3 million per year, which is $21.2 million in total value.

There had been some speculation before the trade that McMann could even return to the Maple Leafs, although Toronto has a ton of priorities, and maybe less need for McMann with the presumed draft pick of Gavin McKenna.

Still, someone will be getting a good player, and McMann will be getting a good payday.

"McMann is staring down the biggest payday of his professional career after scoring 29 goals in a season split between the Kraken and the Toronto Maple Leafs — the fourth-highest total among potential free agents this summer," Johnston writes. "A big body who skates well, McMann drives the net hard and plays a power game. He’s also unafraid to take the body and get in on the forecheck, and he has authored a great story of perseverance — going undrafted before working his way up from the ECHL. His biggest asset is an explosive shot release."

From undrafted to a big deal -- it's a cool story no matter where McMann signs his contract.
