Knicks second-round draft pick makes expected decision on NBA future

The New York Knicks' second-round draft pick is taking his talents back to Germany. 

Officially, guard Jack Kayil, the 39th overall pick in this year's draft, has signed a new five-year contract with Alba Berlin, according to the New York Post's Jared Schwartz. 

“Last season was super successful, and I enjoyed a lot — that’s why I’m all the more excited to stay in Berlin,” Kayil said in a statement.

“Can’t wait to pick up where we left off. The NBA is and remains a big dream of mine — and ALBA is the right place for me to continue that path," he continued. "The club has already helped me take the decisive steps in this direction. I’m just happy and grateful to be back in this incredible environment.”

The 20-year-old is now a draft-and-stash prospect. The Knicks will retain his draft rights while he plays in Germany. 

When Kayil was selected by the Knicks, he openly said he would prefer to stay in the NBA this season. He played for New York at Summer League.

In four games in Las Vegas, Kayil averaged 8.8 points on 34.2 percent shooting from the field. He added 3.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds a game. 

Kayil's skillset -- a scrappy defender with good court vision-- led Alba Berlin to victory in the Bundesliga championship last season. 

With three two-way slots open on the Knicks' roster, they will have to pivot if they were planning to give one of them to Kayil.
