Dak Prescott’s touching Cowboys moment reminds fans of his loss

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has handed out plenty of handshakes and quick thank-yous during training camp this summer in Oxnard. On Thursday, one of those routine moments turned into something he did not expect to see later that day.

The gesture came during the team’s annual Heroes Appreciation Day, honoring military families at practice in Oxnard, California. Prescott did not realize what he had actually been given until hours later, once his daughters pointed it out to him.

A video capturing the moment quickly spread online, showing Prescott’s reaction once he realized what the fan-made hat depicted on its side panel.

A fan handed Prescott a dark blue Cowboys cap in the handshake line after practice, and he moved on quickly with a simple thank you to keep the line moving. It wasn’t until later, surrounded by his daughters at the facility, that he noticed the side of the hat featured a hand-drawn image of his brother’s face.

“I didn’t see it until I got with my daughters,” Prescott said. “I took it out and saw my brother’s face on it. It’s awesome.” He added, “That actually means a lot. I wish I knew who did it, so I could tell them a little more than thank you.” Prescott later reunited with the fan who made the hat, thanking him in person outside the team facility that evening.

Prescott’s brother Jace died in April 2020 at age 31. Since then, Prescott has become a prominent advocate for mental health awareness across the league, frequently speaking about grief, therapy, and the importance of seeking help.
