Knicks predicted to sign $21M high-motor 7-year veteran after being waived by Timberwolves

This NBA free agency period has been a great one, to say the least, with all of the twists and turns that have taken place. After all, LeBron James completely put free agency on hold for an entire month before ultimately deciding where he was going.

As of late, the Minnesota Timberwolves have been one of the most active teams after signing Jonathan Kuminga. However, before they could sign Kuminga, they had to make some moves, including a trade with the Utah Jazz.

“The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded Josh Green and cash to the Utah Jazz for Cody Williams and John Konchar, the teams announced Saturday. The Timberwolves are expected to keep Williams, the No. 10 pick in 2024, and waive-and-stretch Konchar, sources told ESPN. Saturday is the final day to waive a player and stretch out his guaranteed salary over multiple seasons,” ESPN’s Shams Charania wrote.

As part of the move, the Timberwolves waived veteran John Konchar once the trade became official.

“The Timberwolves announce that they have just waived John Konchar," NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.

Konchar is now free to sign with whichever team he chooses. One interesting team to monitor is the New York Knicks. The Knicks just won the NBA championship, and SI’s Isaiah De Los Santos believes they could sign Konchar.

“New York could be worried that simply running things back with the same group leads to stagnation or those aforementioned flaws becoming even more troublesome. The perfect way to keep guys on their toes, then, is to bring in some new blood. Though Konchar isn't an All-Star, he is an established veteran who could apply some pressure. He carved out a sustained run in Memphis as a key reserve thanks to his high motor and connective play that brings a spark to the second unit,” Santos wrote.

New York has two roster spots left before reaching its limit. The Knicks are being patient with who they add, and Konchar could be a great fit because he has been the ultimate glue guy throughout his career.

Konchar has made $21 million throughout his career so far. He is also a capable perimeter shooter when needed, which is something every team can use. New York would be getting a valuable addition if it follows through with signing Konchar.
