Diamondbacks star Geraldo Perdomo forced out after terrifying 93 MPH line drive to head

The Arizona Diamondbacks experienced a frightening scene Sunday when shortstop Geraldo Perdomo was forced out of the game against the Houston Astros after being struck in the helmet by a line drive.

The incident occurred during the third inning after Perdomo reached base with a leadoff single. With Ketel Marte at the plate, Marte ripped a 93 mph line-drive single that struck Perdomo on the side of his helmet as he attempted to advance to second base.

Perdomo immediately went down and remained on the ground while players from both teams quickly gathered around him. Arizona’s athletic training staff rushed onto the field to evaluate the veteran infielder.

After spending several minutes on his back, Perdomo eventually sat up and spoke with trainers. He was later helped to his feet and was able to walk off the field under his own power, providing an encouraging sight after the scary collision.

Diamondbacks face major concern

The Diamondbacks later announced that Perdomo had suffered a head contusion. The team said he would continue to be monitored Sunday and into Monday as medical personnel evaluate his condition.

Arizona was forced to make defensive adjustments following Perdomo’s departure.

Ildemaro Vargas moved from first base to shortstop in the bottom of the third inning, while Tim Tawa entered the game to take over at first base.

The situation created an unsettling moment for both teams, especially considering the speed at which Marte’s line drive reached Perdomo.

Although walking off the field was a positive development, Arizona will likely remain cautious with its shortstop before determining when he can return to action.

Head injuries remain an area where teams typically take extra precautions, and the Diamondbacks will have more information after Perdomo undergoes continued observation.

For now, Arizona’s biggest concern isn’t the result of Sunday’s game.

It’s making sure Perdomo is healthy after a routine trip around the bases suddenly turned into one of the most frightening moments of the afternoon.
