Knicks' OG Anunoby to return against Pistons despite strange injury

1 hour ago 3

The New York Knicks will be near full strength for Thursday's matchup against the Detroit Pistons at Madison Square Garden.

Guard Miles McBride remains sidelined after undergoing surgery for a core muscle injury. However, OG Anunoby is ready to return after missing the Knicks' last four games before the All-Star break.

Anunoby's weird injury includes dealing with pain in his right foot after undergoing a toenail avulsion.

"OG says he's ready to play tomorrow," the New York Post's Stefan Bondy wrote Wednesday. "He's getting better. His toenail hasn't grown back yet, however, and he doesn't know why it was ripped off."

What is a toenail avulsion?

Anunoby is clearly confused about what led him to this rare injury.

According to foot and ankle specialists, basketball players are susceptible to a toenail avulsion due to "intense trauma or injury" tight footwear, and repetitive jumping and landing.

As one of the Knicks' best defenders, Anunoby stays active and often guards opposing teams' best players. How will he fare without one of his toenails? New York is about to find out.
