The New York Knicks are focused on winning another championship after a successful season a year ago. However, the roster could become an issue as more players look to secure new contracts.

The Knicks have the option to sign Josh Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns to extensions without going over the dreaded second apron.

“Bobby Marks says that scenarios have been presented to the Knicks where Josh Hart and KAT (both CAA) accept contracts that keep the Knicks under the second apron in 2027-28. He says KAT's comments Monday irked Dolan, which prompted today's statement," New York Post's Stefan Bondy wrote.

However, with the season about to begin, the Knicks don't want contract extension talks to become a distraction. The organization released a statement making it clear that negotiations would be put on hold for now.

“As an organization, our entire focus is on preparing for the upcoming season and delivering another year for our fans to be proud of. As a result, we will not be negotiating contract extensions until later in the season and will remain solely focused on preparing for the start of the season," a Knicks spokesperson told ESPN's Shams Charania.

On Sunday, Towns learned of the decision for the first time. He admitted to the media that he was disappointed a deal hadn't been reached before the regular season.

“It was news to me. Very disappointed to say the least. Let's state the obvious. It's business, but there is business on the court for us to handle,” Towns said.

The tension between the two sides is becoming increasingly evident. Towns wants an extension and understands he may have to take a pay cut, but he doesn't want to make a significant financial sacrifice.

New York wants to stay below the second apron while also working toward an extension for Hart. The situation will be worth monitoring as the season progresses, but for now, Towns is disappointed with how things have unfolded.
