The New York Knicks have made headlines this offseason for their pursuit of Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd. However, Kidd wasn’t the only Mavericks coach that the Knicks showed interest in.
According to Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News, the Knicks reached out to Dallas regarding assistant coach Sean Sweeney, who recently accepted a role on the San Antonio Spurs’ coaching staff. Sweeney had worked alongside Kidd in Brooklyn, Milwaukee, and Dallas.
The Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau on June 3, and reached out to the Mavericks for permission to interview Jason Kidd, but were denied.
“In recent days the Knicks inquired about Sweeney. He’s definitely on track to becoming a head coach, has interviewed for multiple jobs,” Townsend said. “If the Spurs are successful, I don’t think he’ll be there long.”
“Sweeney viewed the Spurs job as taking on more responsibility, another step to becoming a head coach,” he added. “Jason Kidd is an established coach with a Finals and 2 conference finals. In that sense, though he loves Dallas, Sweeney had a glass ceiling. It’s more about that than the associate head coach title.”
Sweeney had previously been linked to the Phoenix Suns and Detroit Pistons during their recent coaching searches. Now, he’ll join Mitch Johnson’s staff in San Antonio, for now.
The Knicks’ coaching search has been narrowed down after an initially wide net was cast. Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown both interviewed for the opening last week, and are considered the primary candidates to land the job as of now.
