The New York Knicks have a training camp roster that will feature nothing short of intense competition for the final two roster spots. The organization is still trying to find the right fits for the final spots on its roster.
New York is coming off an NBA championship, and last week, the team made several signings for training camp.
“Earlier this week, the Knicks agreed to Exhibit 9 deals with five players: Ochai Agbaji, Bruce Brown, John Konchar, Drew Eubanks, and James Wiseman. The Knicks only have two roster spots open and are approaching the second apron, so there’s more at stake than just performance and fit during the preseason for this group,” SI’s Max Wildstein wrote.
It is still unknown who is likely to make the roster, but Mike Brown’s connection to James Wiseman has him as a potential favorite.
“If James Wiseman makes the Knicks roster it will cement a reunion with former Warriors assistant Mike Brown…He was with Wiseman his first 2 seasons as a Warrior…Word is that Brown is indeed a Wiseman fan,” The Stein Line’s Marc Stein wrote.
There will be some big decisions to make, and it is all going to come down to performance. Wildstein believes that former lottery pick Ochai Agbaji is the least likely to make the roster.
“At his size (6-foot-5), if he’s able to show the Knicks that his shooting touch is still there, there might be a role for him at the end of the bench, but he’s probably the most unlikely of the group to make the roster with the others either bringing more to the table or filling a bigger need at the five,” Wildstein wrote.
Agbaji was viewed as one of the best college players during his tenure with the Kansas Jayhawks. His career hasn’t played out the way he has wanted, even after an impressive stint with the Toronto Raptors.
It remains to be seen exactly what will happen, but for now, it sure seems Agbaji is on the outside looking in when it comes to making the roster.
