The same question has been hanging over the Golden State Warriors like a dark cloud throughout the summer: whether or not Steph Curry was going to sign a contract extension. The 17-year veteran has spent his entire career in Golden State, and with his previous contract set to expire, some began to question whether he would remain with the organization.
Curry has spent the last couple of months reminding fans that he is loyal to the Warriors. Just a week ago, he reminded everyone that he wants to be a Warrior for life.
“Not at all. I've always stated that I wanna be a lifer with Golden State… My mission is to stay in Golden State and be competitive, the contract stuff will take care of itself," Curry said.
Finally, on Friday night, Curry took a $20 million pay cut on his extension with Golden State.
“Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has agreed to a two-year, $116 million contract extension, tying the franchise legend to the only organization he has ever known through his 20th NBA season, league sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Friday. The deal includes a player option in the final season (2028-29), according to sources,” ESPN’s Anthony Slater wrote.
Curry could have received up to a $136 million contract. Many figured that the four-time champion would receive that number, and he was eligible for it. However, Curry showed his loyalty to the organization by declining the max extension and settling for a significant pay cut.
“League sources told ClutchPoints that the Warriors did offer Stephen Curry the full 2-year, $136.7M max contract extension he was eligible for this offseason as one of many options. The Warriors star told management he would take a discount now, leading to a 2-year, $116M deal,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.
The Warriors were willing to give Curry everything he could possibly get, but he declined the offer in an effort to help the organization remain competitive in the future. There are major implications that come with the deal. If Curry had accepted the full amount, Golden State would have had less salary-cap flexibility moving forward. By taking less, the Warriors have more room to build around their franchise star.
This is just the latest example of Curry doing whatever it takes to help the Warriors win. There are still championship hopes in Golden State with this extension, and Curry's decision to take less money allows the organization build a stronger roster around him. Once again, Curry has shown his loyalty in full force.
