When it comes to remaining options for the Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals in their respective head coach searches, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is the best of the bunch.
Kubiak entered the head-coach cycle as one of the hottest names, and rightly so, he is the offensive play-caller for a team in the Super Bowl and his offense was among the league's best during the regular season.
While Kubiak was expected to get a second interview with at least the Raiders this week, that has yet to happen and if this week passes without one, the Raiders and Cardinals will have to wait until after the Super Bowl to talk to him again.
However, Tony Pauline of Essentially Sports is reporting that Kubiak is expected to get those second interviews with both the Raiders and Cardinals this week.
The bad news for Arizona and the good news for the Raiders is that Kubiak is not believed to be interested in actually taking the Cardinals job and it looks like his decision will come down to Las Vegas or staying in Seattle.
Pauline also notes that Arizon's job is "not very desirable for anyone."
"Vegas or back to Seattle for Klint," Pauline wrote.
"Kubiak has interviews set up later this week with the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders. The sense I’m getting is that he would likely return to Seattle rather than take the head coaching job with Arizona, unless they somehow blow him away with an amazing offer. The Cardinals are not a very desirable job for anyone," the NFL insider reported.
Pauline adds that Kubiak and any other Raiders candidate "must be comfortable" with having minority owner Tom Brady "looking over their shoulder and potentially second-guessing decisions."
This isn't the first time we've heard concern about Brady's role, as NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported candidates were confused with the structure of Las Vegas' operation inside the building with Brady not being very present on a daily basis.
“Las Vegas… you’ve got Tom Brady ostensibly running the football operation along with John Spytek. That’s directly a quote from owner Mark Davis. And yet, people come out of those interviews just going, ‘Who exactly is running the building?’” Pelissero said on the Rich Eisen Show.
“What exactly… what am I looking at here? Tom lives in Miami," Pelissero added. "How is he co-running the football operations from 2000 miles away? Again, and in a really tough division where you’re going up against Sean Payton, and Andy Reid and Jim Harbaugh.”
What the Raiders do have going for them is the fact that they have the No. 1 overall pick, which will almost certainly be Fernando Mendoza, and some attractive offensive pieces in tight end Brock Bowers and running back Ashton Jeanty.
Along with those three, Las Vegas' heaping cap space number of $81.3 million means they can build up the roster rather quickly through free agency.
But will all of that be enough for Kubiak to quell potential concerns over the Raiders' operation? Only time will tell.
