KL Rahul missed out on a big score as Aiden Markram took a brilliant catch on Day 2 of the opening Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, November 15. The right-handed batter looked set before playing one straight to the first slip. He departed for 39 runs off 119 balls, comprising one six and four boundaries.

The dismissal came in the 40th over of India’s first innings. Keshav Maharaj bowled a length ball near the crack outside off-stump. The ball spun away towards the fourth stump line, and Rahul looked in two minds whether to leave or play the ball on the back foot. The ball took an edge and went low towards Markram, who kept his fingers underneath the ball to complete a fair catch. Rahul waited for a while until the TV umpire confirmed the dismissal.

South Africa remove two set Indian batters by dismissing KL Rahul and Washington Sundar before Lunch on Day 2

South Africa bowlers Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj dismissed KL Rahul and Washington Sundar (27), respectively, to help the tourists bounce back against India in the first Test. They continued to make inroads as Corbin Bosch dismissed Rishabh Pant for 27 off 24 balls. The wicketkeeper-batter tried to counterattack, smashing two sixes, but failed to last long at the crease. Meanwhile, India captain Shubman Gill was retired hurt for four runs off three deliveries.

At the time of writing, the hosts were 138/4 at Lunch, with Ravindra Jadeja and Dhruv Jurel batting in the middle.

Earlier on Day 1, Jasprit Bumrah bagged a fifer as the Proteas were bundled out for 159 in their first innings. Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav also scalped two wickets apiece. None of the South African batters found themselves going as they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals following a 57-run opening partnership between Aiden Markram (31) and Ryan Rickelton (23).

India haven’t lost a Test match against the Proteas since 2010. The Men in Blue haven’t lost a Test series against SA since 1999/00.
