The Sacramento Kings have started the 2026-27 NBA season with five consecutive losses. That difficult opening has overshadowed one of the most impressive individual performances by a rookie this season.
Darius Acuff Jr. scored 34 points and handed out 14 assists Thursday night in Sacramento's 132-120 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans. The former Arkansas standout added six rebounds while shooting 13-for-26 from the field. The performance placed him in rare company.
According to the NBA, Acuff became just the fourth teenager in league history to record at least 30 points and 10 assists in a game.
The other three are LeBron James, Luka Doncic and Stephon Marbury. That is an extraordinary list for a young player still learning the demands of professional basketball.
Sacramento has found a bright spot
Acuff's performance was not simply a scoring outburst. His 14 assists demonstrated the ability to create offense for teammates while handling a significant portion of Sacramento's offensive responsibility. He also became the first Kings rookie to record at least 30 points and 10 assists in a game since Kenny Smith in 1988.
Another 30-piece for Darius Acuff Jr. 🪣 He's only the third player in the last 40 seasons with multiple 30-point games in their first 5 NBA games, joining Allen Iverson and Shaquille O'Neal 🔥 https://t.co/BKUtxlcpMJ
— ESPN Insights (@ESPNInsights) October 30, 2026The distinction connects Acuff to an earlier era of Sacramento basketball.
For a franchise looking to build around younger talent, that is a meaningful early accomplishment. Acuff has already produced multiple 30-point games during the opening stretch of his rookie season.
The Kings have not translated those performances into victories, but his development gives the organization something encouraging to evaluate.
The loss revealed Sacramento's bigger challenge
New Orleans entered Thursday without a victory and finally broke through with a balanced offensive performance.
Seven Pelicans scored in double figures. Zion Williamson finished with 22 points on 10-for-12 shooting, while Jeremiah Fears contributed 22 points and 13 assists.
Sacramento had a productive night offensively but could not consistently slow the Pelicans. That contrast highlights the difference between an impressive rookie performance and a complete team effort.
Acuff can create scoring opportunities, but the Kings still need to improve defensively and find more consistency across their rotation. A 34-point performance does not solve those problems on its own.

The company he keeps is impossible to ignore
Joining James, Doncic and Marbury in an NBA statistical category does not guarantee that Acuff will follow their career paths.
The sample size remains small, and the league will continue adjusting to his strengths. But producing 34 points and 14 assists as a teenager is an exceptional achievement regardless of the result.
For Sacramento, the challenge is to build enough around its young guard to make those performances matter in the standings. The Kings are still searching for their first victory.
Acuff, however, has already given their fans a reason to pay attention.
