However, a big domino dropped on Thursday evening: Rodriguez, which is trained by Bob Baffert, has been scratched from the race due to injury, per the horse's co-owner, Tom Ryan.
"Out of an abundance of caution, we have made a very tough decision to scratch our Derby horse, Rodriguez. He has a small but slightly sensitive foot bruise that will need a few more days. Therefore, we are resetting our plans and will target him for the Preakness," Ryan wrote on X.
Rodriguez had 12-1 odds to win the Derby, and with this horse being scratched, that moved alternate Baeze into the 20-horse field.
Baeza was recently the runner-up in the Santa Anita Derby on April 5, so this could shake things up considerably just days before the big race.
For now, Ryan says that Rodriguez will look to get ready to go for the Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown, which takes place on May 17 in Baltimore, Maryland.
