The Memphis Grizzlies received an important piece of offseason clarity Friday when veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope exercised his $21.6 million player option for the 2026-27 season, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
While Caldwell-Pope’s decision was widely expected, it carries significant implications for a Grizzlies team looking to remain a contender in the Western Conference. The 33-year-old brings championship experience, defensive versatility, and leadership to a Memphis roster built around star Ja Morant.
Last season was one of the most difficult campaigns of Caldwell-Pope’s 13-year NBA career. The two-time NBA champion averaged 8.4 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.5 rebounds in 21.3 minutes across 51 games, including 14 starts. He also shot 31.6% from three-point range, his lowest mark in several years, while averaging his fewest points and minutes since his rookie season.
His season came to an early end after undergoing surgery in February to correct a misalignment in his right pinkie finger. The injury forced him to miss the final 31 games of the season, leaving Memphis without one of its most experienced perimeter defenders during a critical stretch.
Despite the statistical decline, Caldwell-Pope’s value extends far beyond the box score. Throughout his career with the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Denver Nuggets, and Grizzlies, he has established himself as one of the league’s most reliable role players. He played a key role in championship teams in Los Angeles in 2020 and Denver in 2023, earning a reputation as a dependable two-way contributor capable of defending elite guards and knocking down timely shots.
Grizzlies get boost as Caldwell-Pope resigns
For Memphis, retaining Caldwell-Pope ensures continuity and veteran leadership in a locker room that remains focused on competing for a deep playoff run. If healthy, he can provide valuable depth on the wing while mentoring younger players and helping stabilize the rotation.
While his offensive production may no longer match his peak years, Caldwell-Pope’s championship pedigree and defensive presence continue to make him an important piece of the Grizzlies’ plans heading into the 2026-27 season.
