Kansas' Bill Self receives clean bill of health, returns to everyday duties after heart procedure

Last season, the Kansas Jayhawks hit a rough patch during the regular season. That stretch created noticeable tension between players and coaches — and also included the worst loss of the Bill Self era. The turmoil led many to speculate that Self could be nearing the end of his coaching career, especially with his age being another factor in the conversation. But he quickly shut those rumors down.

“That’s not true at all," Self stated, dismissing the rumors on the Field of 68 podcast.

Just a few weeks ago, Self even spoke about potential successors for his role at Kansas. In the interview, he showed complete unselfishness, saying he hopes whoever replaces him one day will take the program to even greater heights.

“In a perfect world, yes. The answer is an emphatic, yes. But at the end of the day, you know what I would probably hope: if that guy has ties, fantastic. If he doesn’t have ties, go get the best guy that can, you know, take this program, hopefully even to another level,” Self stated.

In July, Self had a serious health scare that required a heart procedure.

“He underwent a procedure to have two stents inserted and the university said he was expected to make a full recovery,” ESPN’s Jeff Borzello wrote.

On Friday, college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman shared a positive update on Self’s recovery.

“Just got off the phone with Kansas coach Bill Self after his health scare a couple weeks ago in which he underwent a heart catheterization and had two stents placed for blocked arteries: Self said he received a clean bill of health from the doctors, has been back in the office daily, is able to play golf and is looking forward to the players returning in about 10 days,” Goodman wrote.

This is great news for the Jayhawks, as Self is aiming to lead the team for at least the upcoming season. Just weeks after his health incident, he appears to be back to full strength — and feeling like his old self again.
