Las Vegas Raiders rookie running back Ashton Jeanty took the field for an NFL game for the first time on Thursday in the team's preseason opener versus the Seattle Seahawks, and it was a night to forget for the Boise State product.
Jeanty played ten snaps and rushed for -1 yards on three carries. The 2025 No.6 overall pick couldn't find any room to run and got completely destroyed by NFL fans for his brutal performance.
Though many have prematurely lost some faith in Jeanty, Raiders head coach Pete Carroll still has confidence in his running back.
During a press conference on Friday, Carroll defended Jeanty, stating that the offense was very basic with their run schemes and the offensive line wasn't getting much movement.
"We were basic," Carroll said via Vegas Sports Today. "We didn't get the movement we wanted. Ashton [Jeanty] didn't get a chance."
When Jeanty was in the game, the offensive line struggled to create running lanes for the dynamic running back. Jeanty tried his best to evade defenders and make something out of nothing, but he got little help from his offensive line.
The 21-year-old's longest rush of the night came on his first carry, which went for three yards. After that, there was nowhere to run for Jeanty, as his second carry on the Raiders' second offensive drive went for -4 yards, and his third carry went for no gain.
Las Vegas will host the San Francisco 49ers next Saturday for their second preseason game. With the starters set to play more, all eyes will be on Jeanty, as the 2024 Heisman Trophy candidate could use a bounce-back outing to gain back some momentum lost from an underwhelming debut in Seattle.
