Josh Jobe's journey from practice squad to Super Bowl starter

The Philadelphia Eagles waived cornerback Josh Jobe the offseason before they won Super Bowl 59. He went on the sign with the Seahawks practice squad and developed into a bona fide starter helping lead Seattle to Super Bowl 60.

It’s the ultimate comeback story. Jobe has become a key component in Seattle’s Nickel defensive along with rookie Nick Emmanwori.

According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Jobe ranks sixth in fewest yards per target allowed among defensive backs this season, including playoffs. His teammate, Riq Woolen, is ranked third.

The secondary is part of what makes Seattle the best defense in the NFL this year. Head coach Mike Macdonald is another component. The 38-year-old coach was asked Wednesday about Jobe’s journey from practice squad to Super Bowl starter and how far along he’s come.

“It’s a great example of … the pride that we take and how we run our program,” Macdonald said. “If you play great football and you’re a great teammate, you’re gonna get an opportunity to play. Josh was someone we acquired at the beginning of last year. The guy just came in and made a ton of plays on our ready squad.

“I remember our veteran receivers saying, ‘Hey, this guy’s pretty dang good.’ He kept making plays and when there was an opportunity for him to get on the field, we felt really confident for him to go out there and do his job. He just kept hitting those daily inputs. It’s powerful when you stack those things. Here he is, he should be really proud of himself.”

Jobe and the Seattle defense will look to stop MVP candidate Drake Maye and the New England Patriots on Sunday.
