Every two years, sports fans across the world tune in to see either the Summer or Winter Olympics, with the best athletes competing for the ultimate prize.

This year is the Winter Olympics turn, as the best cold-weather athletes will get the opportunity to earn a gold medal. The 2026 games are especially interesting since the NHL is allowing its players to compete after they missed the 2022 Winter games.

Olympic host cities are determined years in advance to allow them time to prepare the infrastructure necessary for the games. So, the International Olympic Committee has decided locations for Olympics through 2034.

Here's a breakdown of where the next five Olympic games will take place.

Where are the Olympics this year?

The 2026 Winter Olympics are set to take place in Milan and Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy, with the entirety of the games occurring across Northeastern Italy.

After submitting the bid to host these Winter Olympics, Milan-Cortina was awarded the 2026 games in 2019, beating out Stockholm and Åre in Sweden by 13 votes. It will be Italy's third time hosting a Winter Olympics, as Torina hosted in 2006 and Cortina D'Ampezzo hosted in 1956, and fourth overall, since Rome hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics.

Milan will play host to the opening ceremony of this year's Winter Olympics Games, while Verona will be where the event holds its closing ceremony. In between, eight different Italian locations will play a part in hosting the games including Milan, Anterselva/Antholz, Bormio, Cortina D'Ampezzo, Livingo, Predazzo, Tesero and Verona.

Here's a look at where each event will take place during the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Future Olympics locations

The International Olympic Committee has decided the host cities for the next two Summer Olympics and the next two Winter Olympics beyond the 2026 games. Here's a look at which cities have earned the right to host future Olympic games.

  • 2028: Los Angeles (Summer)
  • 2030: French Alps (Winter)
  • 2032: Brisbane (Summer)
  • 2034: Salt Lake City (Winter)

2028 Summer Olympics: Los Angeles

The 2028 Summer Olympics will return to the United States for the first time since 1996, when Atlanta played the host. This time, Los Angeles will be the host city for the games, which will make it the third city to host three Summer Olympics game, joining London and Paris.

Initially, Los Angeles put in a bid for the 2024 Olympics, but when Paris was awarded that event, Los Angeles was named host to the 2028 games. The event will begin on July 14 and run through July 30, with the majority of the events taking place in venues like SoFi Stadium the Rose Bowl, Intuit Dome, and Crypto.com Arena.

Additionally, a few events like softball and canoeing will actually take place in Oklahoma City so that Los Angeles didn't have to build more temporary venues.

2030 Winter Olympics: French Alps

After Paris got the chance to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, the French Alps will get its turn as it will host the 2030 Winter Olympics. The opening ceremony for the event is set for February 1, 2030, while the closing ceremony will be on February 17, 2030.

Events for the 2030 Winter Olympics will be split between four French cities: Nice, Briancon, Haute-Savoie and Savoie. France has hosted the Winter Olympics three times; in 1992 at Albertville, in 1968 at Grenoble, and at the first Winter Olympics in 1924 at Chamonix.

2032 Summer Olympics: Brisbane

For the 2032 Summer Olympics, Brisbane, Australia won the bid to host in a 2021 vote by unanimous selection. Australia last hosted the Summer Olympics in 2000 in Sydney, and the continent also played host in 1956 in Melbourne, making this the third time Australia will host an Olympic Games.

The 2032 Summer Olympics will take place along Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, with Melbourne and Sydney potentially hosting select events as well. Australia is still in the midst of preparations for the event, so it's a little early to tell exactly where each event will be played.

2034 Winter Olympics: Salt Lake City

The Olympics will return to the United States in 2034, this time to Salt Lake City, Utah, which will host its second Winter Olympics ever. Previously, Salt Lake City played host to the 2002 Winter Olympics, and Salt Lake City is one of just two American cities to ever host the Winter Olympic Games, along with Lake Placid, New York.

Since Salt Lake City hosted the games so recently, the city already has the bones necessary to play host for the games, with events taking place both in the city an in areas around the city.
