Josh Allen's opinion of Philip Rivers gives retired QB a shot to land Bills head coach job

The Buffalo Bills have Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers as one of their head coach candidates.

No, that's not a typo. The Bills are actually going to interview Rivers for their vacancy on Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"ESPN sources: former Colts QB and current St. Michael Catholic High School coach Philip Rivers is interviewing today for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job," Schefter reported.

It is no doubt surprising that Rivers is getting a look for a head coach job, and especially such a high-profile opening as Buffalo's.

Sure, he's very experienced as an NFL quarterback, and there were rumors teams would be looking into the possibility of considering him for vacancies, but he has zero head-coaching experience in college or the pros.

Rivers made waves during the 2025 campaign after deciding to come out of retirement after five seasons to play for the Colts after Daniel Jones' injury.

After that happened, Bills quarterback Josh Allen shared his thoughts on Rivers coming out of retirement and made it clear he's a huge fan.

"Philip's one of the greatest to ever play the game," he said. "He's an unbelievable football player, smart as any quarterback to play in this league and we'll see how it works out. I'm rooting for him because, again, another great human being."

It's important to note Allen's feelings on Rivers because the Bills superstar is going to have a hand in deciding who the next head coach will be, owner Terry Pegula admitted.

"Josh Allen is going to play a major role in not only consulting, but selecting the next head coach of the Buffalo Bills," Pegula said.

In fact, Allen is reportedly sitting in on interviews as the Bills speak with their candidates, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, and he will have "significant say" in who Buffalo hires.

While we wouldn't say Rivers is even close to the favorite to land Buffalo's coveted job, Allen's opinion of Rivers at least gives him a chance.
