The Dallas Mavericks are trying to figure out what to do with some of the guys on their roster as the new season approaches. The team has a franchise guy in Cooper Flagg and another one in Kyrie Irving, which makes things very interesting.
The Mavericks are going to see how the first several games work out before making a decision. However, those games could determine Irving’s future.
“The Mavericks, as we've been writing since mid-June, have consistently swatted away trade interest this offseason in nine-times-an-All-Star guard Kyrie Irving. Rival teams, however, continue to wonder aloud about how firmly Dallas will stick to that stance once the season begins and the next in-season trade deadline on Feb. 11 gradually approaches. The primary factor fueling that curiosity, of course, is that fact that Irving is 34 and Mavericks star forward Cooper Flagg is 19. Not your average age gap between the team's two best players," The Stein Line's Marc Stein wrote.
With Irving potentially hitting the trade block, USA Today’s Wajih AlBaroudi believes the San Antonio Spurs are a landing spot.
“De'Aaron Fox was abysmal when it mattered most in the NBA Finals, so it'd be hard to blame the Spurs from moving on at point guard. Irving has championship experience with the Cleveland Cavaliers and isn't afraid to take the big shot in the biggest moment. He'd be a perfect complement to Victor Wembanyama,” AlBaroudi wrote.
Irving would be a nice veteran for Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle to learn from. After all, they are both set to take over the league at some point.
“If I’m a guard in the NBA, I do not want to see them boys the next 10 years. They’re going to be the new Steph and Klay,” NBA legend Charles Barkley said.
Getting Irving to the Spurs for the development of all their young talent would be huge. The most important thing he has under his belt is Finals experience, which they lacked last season.
Irving has made $347 million throughout his successful career. San Antonio is looking to take that next step, and getting rid of Fox in exchange for Irving would be a great first step toward that goal.
