The NBA world had a huge story break last week, as San Antonio Spurs long-time head coach Gregg Popovich resigned, ending his decades-long run as the team's coach.
Before his stepping down, Popovich was the longest-tenured head coach in the four major North American sports. Now, that distinction belongs to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who has been at the head of the Steelers for 18 seasons and is now preparing for his 19th.
Tomlin has been to a pair of Super Bowls, winning one, and he's never had a losing season. All of that has contributed to his ability to stay in Pittsburgh for so long.
But Tomlin's reign atop the list may not last long too long. The Steelers have been stuck in mediocrity for far too long now and Pittsburgh's fans have made it clear they're ready for a change.
Of course, ownership hasn't agreed up until this point, but if the Steelers continue down the path they're currently on, Tomlin could get the boot at some point.
"When you look at how many games Mike has won in this league, you don't win that many games if you're not a good coach," Steelers owner Art Rooney II said, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor.
"And I know he's frustrated like we all are in terms of not being able to take that next step, but we still feel good about him being the leader and still think he has the strengths that he always had in terms of being able to lead a team," Rooney added.
If Tomlin gets fired or resigns, that would clear the way for Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh to become the longest-tenured head coach in North American Sports, per The Athletic.
Harbaugh, who also has one ring, has one less year in the Ravens job than Tomlin in Pittsburgh, and he may have more security right now considering Baltimore just handed him an extension that will keep him around through the 2028 campaign.
But Harbaugh may not be alone atop the list if his time comes, as Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has the same number of seasons in Miami as Harbaugh has in Baltimore.
