Jets just made a quarterback signing and it's not a bad one

The New York Jets are coming off a disastrous 2025 season in Aaron Glenn's first year as head coach. One of the main issues, other than the lackluster defense, was a very poor play from the quarterback position.

Justin Fields was a $40 million mistake. Tyrod Taylor, while an okay starter compared to the rest of their options this season, was far from ideal, and rookie Brady Cook was the worst quarterback in the league by many metrics since his debut.

With a clear need at quarterback this offseason, the Jets have already made one such move to address the need. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Jets have signed a former New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns QB to a futures deal.

"Veteran QB Bailey Zappe is signing a futures deal with the Jets, per source," Pelissero reported Monday afternoon.

This singing, while not likely to instantly become the starter next season, gives the Jets a veteran option who's made a few starts in his NFL career.

Between his three seasons in the league so far, Zappe has made nine starts, but none in 2025. But back in 2024, during his lone start, he had 170 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a far-from-ideal game.

But, during his rookie season in 2022, in four games and two starts, he had a 70.7% completion percentage with 781 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.

The next season, starting six games for the Patriots and playing in 10 total, Zappe had a 59.9% completion percentage with 1,272 passing yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

He's not the best quarterback, evidenced by his availability to be signed to a futures deal. But, considering the Jets quarterback room, Zappe isn't that bad of a signing.

Zappe isn't going to solve the Jets' quarterback issue, but he should provide better depth than Cook provided the Jets this past season.
