Jerry Jones faces big decision as Cowboys linked to powerful veteran with proven NFL production

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys made addressing the running back position a priority early in the offseason, beginning with the re-signing of Javonte Williams. Even with that move completed, several notable free agents remain available around the NFL, and the Cowboys continue to be linked to potential additions.

ESPN analyst Matt Bowen named Nick Chubb as an ideal fit for the Cowboys. The running back entered free agency after spending the 2025 season with the Houston Texans.

"A veteran grinder at this point of his career, Chubb could provide value as the Cowboys' No. 2 or No. 3 option behind starter Javonte Williams," Bowen wrote on Monday, per ESPN. "Chubb can still secure catches on swings and checkdowns in the passing game, but he should be viewed as an early-down option who can use his power and vision in short-yardage situations."

The Cowboys already secured their lead back when Williams signed a three-year, $24 million extension in February following a breakout season that featured 1,200 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. However, building depth in the backfield remains important for a team hoping to make a serious playoff push, which is why Bowen’s suggestion could make sense for the Cowboys’ front office.

Chubb’s last season with Houston showed he can still be productive in a rotational role, even if he is no longer carrying the full workload he once handled with the Cleveland Browns. He rushed for more than 500 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry last season.

Chubb established himself as one of the league’s most dependable running backs from 2018 through 2022, earning four straight Pro Bowl selections along with an All-Pro honor. He has also expressed confidence that the lengthy recovery process from his major 2023 knee injury is now fully behind him.
