Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder close in on major Liverpool investment

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is close to buying a stake in Premier League side Liverpool, The Sporting News understands.

The Reds are expected to soon welcome some of the world's wealthiest businessmen into their ownership structure, with a consortium involving Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in advanced talks over a substantial investment in the club.

They are seeking to purchase a minority shareholding of around a third in Liverpool, with the proposed transaction understood to place a valuation of approximately $6bn on the Premier League side.

Businessman Amit Bhatia is leading the consortium and has previous experience in English football through his involvement with Queens Park Rangers.

Fenway Sports Group would remain Liverpool's controlling shareholder under the proposed arrangement.

FSG has owned the club since October 2010, when it completed a £300m takeover at a time when Liverpool were facing significant financial uncertainty.

Since then, Liverpool have grown into one of world football's most commercially powerful clubs while also enjoying sustained success on the pitch, including Premier League and Champions League triumphs.

A valuation of $6bn would underline the financial growth achieved during that period and would represent another significant increase from the figure attached to the club when US investment firm Dynasty Equity purchased a small stake in 2023.

Bezos, who founded Amazon and later stepped down as its chief executive, is regarded as one of the richest people in the world, with his fortune estimated at more than $280bn.

Saverin, meanwhile, accumulated much of his wealth through his early involvement in Facebook and has an estimated fortune of more than $30bn.

He is also no stranger to takeover discussions involving Premier League clubs, having been involved in a group which attempted to buy Chelsea during the ownership process in 2022.

Bezos has not previously established himself as a major investor in football, meaning his involvement would represent a significant move into the sport.

The existing owners have previously made clear that they are open to outside investment while maintaining control of Liverpool, rather than pursuing a full sale of the club.

However, the size of the proposed stake is likely to lead to questions over the consortium's longer-term ambitions.

Should an investment of more than 30% be completed, Bezos, Saverin and Bhatia would immediately become influential figures within the Liverpool ownership structure.

It also represents another example of the growing attraction of elite football to global investors.

Premier League clubs have increasingly become major international assets, benefiting from broadcasting income, sponsorship growth and worldwide supporter bases.

Liverpool, with their historic success and enormous global following, remain among the most valuable names in the sport.

Bringing investors of this financial stature into the club would therefore represent the most significant change to Liverpool's ownership structure since the Americans arrived at Anfield in 2010.
