Jazz predicted to cut ties with future star for aging $19.5 million Celtics center

The Utah Jazz have been involved in trade rumors since the start of the 2024-25 season.

According to an NBA insider, the organization could trade an intriguing young asset to the Boston Celtics for a center with limited time in the big leagues.

“Losing (Al) Horford would be a setback, but his performance significantly declined in last year’s postseason,” The Wrightway Sports Network’s Arkay wrote Friday.

“At this stage in his career, he mainly serves as a veteran presence in the locker room. Boston might consider bringing in a younger center to back up (Kristaps) Porziņģis.”

“Since Horford is likely to retire after this season, Boston could capitalize on his value now. Acquiring (Walker) Kessler would be a solid return for the veteran, boosting the Celtics’ defense.”

“Kessler is currently averaging 9.2 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 2.9 blocks per game. He could significantly strengthen Boston’s frontcourt and has a club option for $4.8 million next season before becoming a restricted free agent.”

“With a salary of just $2.3 million this season, Kessler offers Boston some financial flexibility if they pursue a trade. Bringing him in from Utah could position the Celtics for a stronger title run next June.”

Arkay’s proposed trade would force Utah to trade Kessler to the Celtics for Horford and 2026 first-round pick.

It’s no secret the Jazz are in rebuild mode, so acquiring a future first-round pick in the trade would likely satisfy the franchise.

Having said that, how else would the Jazz benefit from this seemingly one-sided transaction? Kessler is a promising third-year center with daunting rim protection and a developing offensive repertoire.

The organization should be excited about tracking his progress over time rather than moving in a different direction.

While Horford is an 18-year veteran with valuable championship experience, his age would make it challenging to leave his mark on the Jazz.

The 38-year-old center is a shell of his former self, making it a gamble to swap Kessler for Horford during the season.

Kessler may not be a superstar in the present, but it’s worth investing in the Auburn product and seeing what transpires.

Hopefully, for the Jazz’s sake, they can identify Kessler’s potential and ensure he's a part of their future.
