Jazz Chisholm Jr. absence raises concern for Yankees before Rockies game

The New York Yankees will be without their starting second baseman for Wednesday's game against the Colorado Rockies. 

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is absent from today's Yankees lineup after jamming his thumb into second base on a head-first slide last night. 

During a replay review, the two-time All-Star could be seen shaking his hand and holding onto his thumb. He was clearly in some level of pain. 

Jose Caballero, who took over for Chisholm at second base for the ninth inning of yesterday's 5-3 victory, will start at second and bat ninth.

Before the injury, Chisholm went 2-for-4 with two singles, raising his season OPS to .715. 

He's fallen short of his 50-50 expectations, but Chisholm remains one of the top second basemen in the Majors.

With 19 home runs and 40 stolen bases, the left-handed hitter has produced a 1.5 bWAR. 

Hopefully, Chisholm's injury does not require a lengthy IL stint. The Yankees could use his mix of power and speed in the postseason lineup. 

The 28-year-old will become a free agent at the end of the season.
