Jaxon Smith-Njigba entered the 2025 season with growing expectations. He finished it as the NFL's leading receiver and left little statistical evidence that his rise was a one-year anomaly.
The Seattle Seahawks receiver posted 1,793 receiving yards after recording 1,130 the previous season. That jump alone would attract attention. The context makes it even more impressive. Smith-Njigba accounted for 44.1% of Seattle's receiving yards, a level of offensive responsibility rarely seen in the modern NFL.
The strongest argument for continued success comes from a metric that tends to predict future performance. Smith-Njigba averaged 3.85 yards per route run in 2025. According to the data provided, only Tyreek Hill's 2023 season produced a higher mark during the past decade.
That matters because elite seasons in yards per route run are usually followed by more elite seasons. The top of the list includes players such as Hill, Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown, Davante Adams and Julio Jones. Productive receivers frequently return to that group once they establish themselves there.
The growth in Smith-Njigba's game extends beyond production. When he entered the league, questions surrounded his downfield ability after he posted a 4.52-second 40-yard dash at his pro day. Early in his career, Seattle often used him near the line of scrimmage. Under offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, 28% of his rookie targets came on screens.
His role expanded as his development continued. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, his average route speed increased from 13.5 mph as a rookie to 14.2 mph in his third season. Because that added speed arrived without sacrificing route precision, defenders faced a more difficult assignment.
Defenses will adjust in 2026. Opponents now have an entire season of evidence showing Smith-Njigba is Seattle's primary threat. Even so, the combination of production, efficiency and technical growth suggests his place among the league's top receivers is built on more than a single breakout season.
