India ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah knocked over Corbin Bosch to provide a key breakthrough in the context of the game against South Africa on Day 3 of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, November 16. The speedster cleaned up Bosch for 25 to break a 44-run eighth-wicket stand between him and skipper Temba Bavuma.

The dismissal came in the 48th over of South Africa’s second innings. Bumrah bowled a back-of-a-length ball that skidded off the surface. The batter failed to get his bat down on time as the ball went on to hit the top of the off-stump. As a result, India got the breakthrough after 79 deliveries. Nonetheless, Bosch helped the Proteas stretch their lead past 100, including two sixes.

Interestingly, Corbin Bosch played with Jasprit Bumrah at the Mumbai Indians (MI) last season. He, however, looked clueless against the World No.1-ranked Test bowler. Notably, Bumrah picked up a fifer in the first innings to fold the Proteas for just 159. It was his 16th five-wicket haul in Tests.

Jasprit Bumrah comes to India’s rescue on a spin-friendly pitch against South Africa in Kolkata; Temba Bavuma stands tall for the Proteas

Jasprit Bumrah took the pitch out of the play and continued his exploits with the ball in the first Test. The speedster struck on his third over after being asked to bowl by stand-in captain Rishabh Pant, who is leading in the absence of Shubman Gill (out due to a stiff neck).

Meanwhile, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma led by example, scoring the first half-century of the game.

At the time of writing, the tourists were 150/8 in their second innings, with Bavuma and Harmer at the crease.

Notably, the Proteas have not won a Test match in India since 2010. The World Test Champions will be looking to put their best foot forward in the ongoing fixture. They are coming on the back of a 1-1 draw in a two-match Test series in Pakistan.

Notably, Axar Patel pointed out that the pitch is tricky to bat on. The all-rounder said that a target above 125 could prove tricky. He said after Day 2 (via Cricbuzz):

“From one end it feels like it's going straight, but from the other end everything is happening. Have to play attacking cricket as a batter. Have to convert loose balls and keep an attacking mindset. Can't have a defensive mindset because you're never in." "When you know there's something in it for the bowlers, you can get carried away by the thought of bowling some magic balls. Patience is key. If we can keep them under 125, it should be chaseable,” he added.

As per Cricbuzz, the highest successful chase at the venue in Tests is 120 (by India) in 2004.
