Jake Bennett promotion proves Red Sox are all in on youth-dominated roster this season

The Boston Red Sox have faced a lot of adversity and challenges this year, leading them to be one of the worst teams in baseball. On top of that, they’ve been hit with the injury bug early. losing All-Star Sonny Gray to the IL, and now their Cy Young runner-up ace Garrett Crochet

However, the Red Sox do have a bunch of young talent in their pipeline, especially pitchers. Now, they’ve picked another top prospect to join their major league roster in No. 6 lefty starter Jake Bennett from AAA Worcester.

The #RedSox today recalled LHP Jake Bennett from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 64 and start tonight’s game against the Houston Astros,” the Red Sox tweeted out on X.

The Sox traded for Bennett this offseason to give them more lefty pitching depth. So far, they definitely made a good move, as Bennett is tearing up AAA.

So far this season, Bennett has posted a 2-1 record, a 0.86 ERA, 16 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.714 over 21 innings pitched. He relies on his nasty changeup to punch out batters, but has a couple of fastballs that also get up to 96 miles per hour

It’s pretty obvious this will be a temporary assignment for Bennett. With Crochet and Gray only on the 15-day IL, they’ll be back soon enough to reclaim their spots in the order. However, if he proves himself, he could make himself a top option to call on when an injury occurs.

Moreover, if he puts on an incredible display over the next few starts, the Sox may have to consider keeping him in the rotation over some of their more volatile starters. Hopefully, Bennett succeeds at the big league level, and the Red Sox are able to finally right the ship after a disastrous start to the season.
