Jack Jones' career has been shrouded in controversy even before joining the San Francisco 49ers.
If we turn the pages of history, we find that the New England Patriots picked Jones in the 4th round in 2022, and since then, his journey has been filled with significant ups and downs.
In June 2023, he was arrested at the airport with a weapon (charges were later dropped), and subsequently, the Patriots released him due to a curfew violation in Germany before a match.
After that, his reunion with then head coach Antonio Pierce at the Las Vegas Raiders became one of the brightest moments of his career, where he recorded 'pick-sixes' (interception return touchdowns) in two consecutive matches.

The Dolphins' experience and the 49ers' decision
Playing for the Miami Dolphins in the 2025 season, Jones started in all 17 matches and recorded the highest snap share (91.5%) among cornerbacks. However, his recent performance numbers have been somewhat contradictory. On one hand, he intercepted a pass from Marcus Mariota in Madrid, Spain, to secure an overtime win for his team - on the other hand, PFF (Pro Football Focus) ranked his coverage rating below average (62nd out of 112). The 49ers signed him to a one-year contract on Friday. The main reason behind this is nothing other than the planning of new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Morris prefers 'press man coverage,' which is one of Jack Jones' biggest strengths.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 10, 2026Jones is getting a chance to return to his home state of California, and more importantly, this might be his last chance to establish himself as a stable starter in Morris's defense. Meanwhile, the 49ers have acquired an experienced 'ball hawk' behind Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green, who has 8 interceptions and 4 pick-sixes in his career.

Any downsides of Jack Jones' arrival?
The one in the most danger is Darrell Luter Jr., as he might have to sit on the bench due to Jones' arrival. The pressure to save his starting spot will increase on Green, while Upton Stout will face stiff competition from Nate Hobbs in the slot, as Jones' arrival could see Hobbs shifting inside.
It can perhaps be said that the Dolphins have lost an important free agent for 2025, which will likely result in a lack of depth in their defensive backfield.
Jones' 2025 season was decent — 77 tackles, 6 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles, 1 interception, and a 119.3 opponent passer rating. Talking about his PFF Ranking for 2025, he was ranked 67th out of 114 (Overall Grade: 60.2), and 14th in Run Defense (Grade: 77.7).
For comparison, Luter Jr. allowed 12 catches on 18 targets and 2 touchdowns in 184 coverage snaps, along with 28 tackles in the 2025 season.
In the coming days, if the 49ers draft another cornerback, Luter Jr.'s exit from the team is almost considered certain.
