The Denver Broncos had a lot of questions regarding the roster entering the offseason and the biggest questions may have been at the running back position. After failing to find an effective running game in the AFC Championship Game, many fans felt that it prevented the Broncos from going to the Super Bowl.
The team chose to answer most of those roster questions by re-signing their own players, and that extended to the running back position, where J.K. Dobbins, Tyler Badie and Jaleel McLaughlin all got new contracts. Those moves raised eyebrows, particularly the decision to bring back Dobbins rather than to look outside the organization for a more durable runner.
Recently, general manager George Paton not only talked about why the Broncos brought Dobbins back, but also how easy a decision that was for him.
"It was a hip drop, his body didn't break down, he could have played in the Super Bowl. This guy, from the minute he walked into our building, changed it. And so, we just didn't want to let him leave. He meant too much to the building. He was a top four rusher in the league when he got hurt, let's sign him back. He meant too much to this team", said Paton.
The Broncos may have checked in on other free-agent running backs, but a decision to re-sign Dobbins was made quickly, within the first week of the signing period. That has to feel good for Dobbins, who waited all the way until June last year for a team to come calling.
J.K. Dobbins has proven himself to Broncos' organization
Despite the fact that he's never played a full regular season due to injuries, the Broncos believe in the future of Dobbins. That was evident in the fact that the team not only re-signed him, but gave him a two-year deal rather than the one-year contract he likely would have gotten from any other team.
According to Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post, Paton also likes the running back room as it currently stands. That may sound like a terrible notion to many Broncos fans, but this front office and coaching staff have proven for the last couple of years that it stands behind its decisions regardless of public scrutiny. To this point, it's been tough to argue with the results.
