The Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback competition will headline the team's summer activities and training camp this year.
With J.J. McCarthy posting an underwhelming 2025 season, Minnesota decided to sign Kyler Murray to a one-year deal to compete for the starting job with the young signal-caller.
Though it's only June and the Vikings will likely wait till after the preseason to name a Week 1 starter, head coach Kevin O'Connell gave us some insight into what it will take for McCarthy and Murray to win the starting job.
Kevin O'Connell gives blunt answer on Vikings quarterback competition
Last week, McCarthy made some eyebrow-raising statements on Murray's arrival to the quarterback room, stating that the pair are like classmates who sit on opposite sides of the classroom and just learn from the teacher, who is the coach in this case.
"It’s just like two guys in a classroom. He sits on one side, and I sit on the other side. It’s the coaches’ responsibility to teach us and coach us," McCarthy said when asked about his relationship with Murray via Alec Lewis of The Athletic.
These comments raised questions about how the quarterback competition between McCarthy and Murray is going and the relationship between the quarterbacks.
However, it sounds like O'Connell isn't bothered by McCarthy's comments and is focused on their play on the field.
"From a standpoint of what actually matters is what I care about. Did we take the right footwork on a play? Did we have our eyes in the right spot? Did we make a protection call against one of Flos [Brian Flores'] Blitz looks? Did we do our jobs to manufacture the starting point and potential path to success for the offense? There’s enough that goes into that, that I don’t have a ton of space left over for who says what and how they say it. I mean, it’s all a reflection of of how people handle competitive situations, and we’re all going to handle them differently," O'Connell said via Tyler Forness of A to Z Sports.
O'Connell added that he's looking out for how both quarterbacks develop ahead of training camp, and acknowledges that there will be bumps along the way.
"What I care about is when they step between the white lines, that there’s growth and development, and that it really is a competition. I want the best version of that. That doesn’t mean it has to be perfect for either one of those guys," O'Connell said.
Since becoming the Vikings' head coach in 2022, O'Connell has been strictly business, and we have seen more of the same so far this offseason with the McCarthy and Murray competition.
Though Murray is widely considered to be the favorite to snag the starting spot, there is still a ton of time for McCarthy to prove that he should be the Week 1 starter for the second straight year. We'll see what transpires the rest of the summer and in August when it really counts.
