Former ATP World No. 1 Andy Murray once described the noise made by fans chanting Cristiano Ronaldo's Siuuu celebration as 'irritating'. The incident happened at the Australian Open nearly four years ago.
Making his 14th appearance in the competition - in 2022 - Murray had a tough opening round, needing five sets to see off 21st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Belarus at the John Cain Arena.
The Scot was irritated by 'Siuuu' noises made by the crowd during the match and talked about the same in his on-court inverview.
"That's painful stuff there. Those guys," Murray said (as per HITC).Murray also spoke about it during his post-match press conference, initially mistaking those chants for booing:
“Initially, I thought it was, because there were some people booing during my practice yesterday. I have no idea what for. Yeah, so originally that’s what I thought it was. “But then after a few times it was like, no, they’re doing that, I think it’s like ‘Siuu’ or something that Ronaldo does when he scores. And, yeah, it was incredibly irritating.”Murray would go on to lose in the second round at that year's Australian Open, losing in straight sets to qualifier Taro Daniel.
Ronaldo unveiled his now iconic Siu celebraton during Real Madrid's pre-season match against Chelsea in Miami in 2013. The celebration involves leaping in the air after scoring, spinning and uttering 'Siu', which means 'Yes' in English, followed by stretching out his hands while landing in a wide stance.
How has Cristiano Ronaldo fared this season?
Cristiano RonaldoIt's been more than a decade since his iconic 'Siu' celebration, but Cristiano Ronaldo is still going strong, with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, whom he joined on a free transfer in December 2022.
Ronaldo has scored 11 times and provided two assists in 12 games across competitions. All but one of those strikes and one assist have come in nine outings in the Saudi Pro League, where Jorge Jesus' side have a four-point lead atop the standings, winning all nine outings.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner's two other goal contributions this season have come in the Saudi Super Cup, where Al-Nassr lost to Al-Ahli on penaltes in the final.
