We know that the football gods have a cruel sense of humor, and for the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15, they saw their season end at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers.
But that wasn't before losing Patrick Mahomes to a knee injury as he was driving into Chargers' territory to either tie or take the lead. We now know it is the dreaded ACL Mahomes suffered, ruling him out for the rest of this season, and potentially a portion of 2026, too.
With three meaningly fewer games left, and at 6-8, the season has just been disappointing all-around, and for Eric Edholm, in his latest power rankings, the Chiefs maintain their position at No. 20 after a dark Sunday.
"In a shocking double blow, the Chiefs were officially eliminated from postseason contention and Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL, which likely will affect his offseason outlook and timetable, as well," Edholm wrote.

When will Mahomes return from ACL?
There has been a lot of talk over the past 24 hours.
Some think a November return for Patrick is likely, which would put his timeline at roughly a year.
Others think that, due to Mahomes already having surgery to repair his knee, starting Week 1 is now a viable option.
The recovery from an ACL injury is different for each player, and no one is doubting that Mahomes could be the Chiefs' starter come Week 1 of the 2026 season, but a lot would have to go right in his recovery, and the All-Pro can't suffer any setbacks.
Either way, there is growing momentum that Patrick will be back sooner rather than later, and time will tell if his powers of recovery are as potent as his football powers.
