Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has opened up on Liverpool's failed attempt to sign Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day. The Eagles captain was covered by the Reds all summer and they made an official approach to sign him on deadline day, only for the transfer to get blocked at the last moment.
Parish spoke with Men in Blazers after his side's EFL Cup adventure at Anfield in mid-week which saw them eliminate Liverpool, revealing that Guehi was really close to joining them. He pointed out that the England international was ultimately fine with whatever his club decided with regards to the transfer despite the difficult choice they had to make.
"It was a very marginal call. Marc was great about it as a person. Liverpool made the offer. It was a massive club, he was obviously interested in going. But he was fine about it, staying, if that was the decision we made. Obviously it means all of the ball is in his court tremendously as a player and he’s got the choice of wherever he wants to go. It was a very difficult one but I think definitely the right one", he said (via Tribal Football).Liverpool submitted an offer of around £40 million to sign Guehi on transfer deadline day, with Crystal Palace accepting the bid for their captain. The Eagles were prepared to sell the Englishman, who is in the final year of his contract, in order to recoup a fee for his transfer.
Oliver Glasner's side pulled out of the deal at the last minute after Guehi had undergone a medical with the Reds, as they had failed to secure a replacement. They decided to walk away from the deal, ultimately permitting the defender to leave the club as a free agent next summer.
Salah nets landmark goal as Liverpool return to winning ways
Mohamed Salah scored his 250th goal as a Liverpool player to help his side claim all three points in their Premier League meeting with Aston Villa. The Reds ended a run of four successive league defeats with their 2-0 triumph at home to Unai Emery's side.
Egypt international Salah opened the scoring for Arne Slot's side in first half stoppage time after a gift from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The 33-year-old scored for a second successive league game, taking him up to four Premier League goals this season and 250 goals for the Reds.
Liverpool were clearly the dominant side at home and doubled their lead in the 58th minute through midfielder Ryan Gravenberch on his return from injury. The 23-year-old saw his effort from outside the box beat Martinez via a deflection to seal the three points for his side, their first since September.
