It's a Beautiful Day to Learn About Grey's Anatomy Stars' IRL Romances

Grey's Anatomy's Caterina Scorsone, E.R. Fightmaster Confirm Relationship Years After Onscreen Romance

Even though Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for a cutting-edge gig in Zurich, it's clear that she remains Meredith Grey's person.

As for all of the other romantic entanglements on Grey's Anatomy—ABC's long-running medical drama, now in its 22nd season—keeping tabs on which doctors are making use of the on-call rooms is more complex than mastering a whipple procedure.

The series' titular character, for instance, has had seven romantic partners since she told Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd (may he rest in peace!) to pick her, choose her, love her.

And clearly producers didn't feel fans were traumatized enough by the death of Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), recently returning to the doctor-falls-for-a-terminally-ill-patient trope to devastate us once more

Outside of Grey Sloan, however, Ellen Pompeo has been married (as in legally, not on a Post-it) to music producer Chris Ivery since 2007, the Boston transplants first connecting at a Los Angeles grocery store.

Similarly, Chandra Wilson (draconian resident turned director of the residency program Miranda Bailey) found her person back in the '80s, the mom to daughters Sarina, 32, and Joylin, 27, and son Michael, 20, telling Parade of her unnamed partner back in 2007, "He and I have a 19-year relationship."

Some of the show's other stars, however, have only recently found someone to lie with them and just forget the world.

Three years after Caterina Scorsone and E.R. Fightmaster played an onscreen couple—with Fightmaster's neuroscientist Kai Bartley breaking things off with Scorsone's neurosurgeon Amelia Shepherd to accept their dream job in London—the two were spotted holding hands IRL during a March 23 outing in Los Angeles.

So, let's waste time chasin' cars couples around our head. After all, it's a beautiful day to learn about the real-life romances of your fave Grey's Anatomy stars.

Ellen Pompeo & Chris Ivery

Looks like it was record producer Chris Ivery who asked Greys Anatomy lead Ellen Pompeo to pick me, choose me, love me after they crossed paths at a Los Angeles grocery store in 2003.

"I was with my mutual friend," the actress—who's starred as Meredith Grey since the series' 2005 premiere—detailed during a 2022 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.

So, after sharing a quick hello with her fellow Boston-area native, "He called me a bunch of times, and I wouldn't call him back. And then he said, 'You're rude. You won't call me back,' and I said, 'Well, because I'm not trying to go on a date with you.' And he said, 'Who's trying to go on a date with you? I don't even know you.'"

Basically, she continued, "We had a fight first. That's kind of always the way to my heart, is like, piss me off and I'm all yours."

Married four years later, the pair welcomed daughter Stella in 2009, her little sister Sienna in 2014 and son Christopher in 2016.

"We're sort of two kids who made it out and then landed in Hollywood and jumped on this ride," Pompeo said of their journey during a 2025 appearance on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast. "We just couldn't believe that something was actually happening—that it was great, that I had this great job and we were getting to travel all over the world."

James Pickens Jr. & Gina Taylor-Pickens

James Pickens Jr.'s starting line with wife Gina Taylor-Pickens dates back to the 1980s when the then-struggling actors met through the New York City theater scene. "I thought she was cute," the future chief medical officer Richard Webber explained to TV Fanatic, "and she gave me her number."

A stroll through Central Park proved to be the first steps of their forever. "We have a mantra that we've lived by for 35 years," the dad to Carl and Gavyn explained of the Deliver Us from Eva actress on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2019. "Love unconditionally, forgive quickly and treat strife and trouble like a basket of rattlesnakes."

E.R. Fightmaster & Caterina Scorsone

The romance between E.R. Fightmaster's neuroscientist Kai Bartley and Caterina Scorsone's neurosurgeon Amelia Shepherd may have been cut short during season 19, but as a wise woman once said, "If you aren’t willing to keep looking for light in the darkest of places without stopping, even when it seems impossible, you will never succeed."

And the skies certainly seemed sunny as Scorsone (mom to daughters Eliza, Pippa and Arwen with ex-husband Rob Giles) and Fightmaster strolled through L.A. in March 2026. Holding hands as they exited local mini-chain Highly Likely it seemed, uh, pretty certain that they were a couple.

Jason George & Vandana Khanna

While Ben Warren has switched in and out of scrubs as anesthesiologist turned firefighter turned surgical resident Jason George, who starred on Grey's and its spin-off Station 19, has never wavered in his committment to writer wife Vandana Khanna

Meeting at the University of Virginia, "She's my day one," he raved to Us Weekly of his bride, mom to Jasmine, Nikhil and Arun. "I've known this woman since before I knew I wanted to be an actor. I’ve known her over half my life. I’ve known her longer than I haven’t known her."

He shared his prescription for a decades-long union during a 2017 appearance on Steve Harvey's titular talk show.

"You're gonna have fights, because if you don't have fights, you're not being honest," he noted, stressing the importance of fighting fair. "When you settle it, don't say it's settled if it's not, and then bring it up again six months later."

Kevin McKidd & Danielle Savre

Following marriages to Jane Parker and Arielle Goldrath, Kevin McKidd (a.k.a. army vet and head of trauma Owen Hunt) debuted a real-life crossover in November 2023, making his red carpet debut with Station 19 star Danielle Savre at the Global Down Syndrome Foundation's 15th Annual Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show.

The pairing "just kind of happened," the dad of four explained to People months later at The Walt Disney Company’s 2023 Emmy Awards Celebration. "We're really happy and she's an amazing human being, so I feel lucky on many levels in my life right now."

Kim Raver & Manu Boyer

Meeting French filmmaker Manu Boyer at a New York swimming pool, Kim Raver decided to fully dive in. "That first meeting is kind of sacred," she detailed to Women's Health in 2005, "so I think I want to keep it to myself."

Though she was willing to share how her husband—the two share sons Luke and Leo—helped her block out her character Teddy Altman's first intimate encounter with onscreen love Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush).

With Raver also tasked with directing the scene, "I couldn't tell whether he was like, 'This is awesome,' or, 'What how are you going to do this?'" she admitted to People. "And I was like, 'This is how we're going to do it.'"

Camilla Luddington & Matthew Alan

Camilla Luddington and Matthew Alan's first date to a 2008 Temper Trap concert proved to be a moment, a love, a dream, aloud. Because 11 years after that initial outing—and two after the actors welcomed their daughter Hayden in 2017—they wed in front of 70 loved ones in Santa Barbara, Calif., with Luddington walking down the aisle to the band's hit "Sweet Disposition."

As the British star, who's embodied Dr. Jo Wilson since 2012, put it to People at the time, "We're just ready to do the damn thing. We kind of already feel married because we have a 2-year-old. But there's something romantic to us about solidifying that family unit by having the ceremony and actually having Hayden present."

And following their 2019 vows, she added, "I'm just excited to get into that new normal of married life."

That included adding to their roster, she and the Castle Rock actor welcoming son Lucas in August 2020.

Chris Carmack & Erin Slaver

Chris Carmack has unique insight on how his orthopedic surgeon Atticus "Link" Lincoln fell for longtime friend Jo. He and now-wife Erin Slaver spent the first year of their relationship as friends after meeting at a cast party for Nashville. (The concert violinist, touring fiddler and vocalist appeared on the series as a backup singer and also played in Sam Palladio's band.)

"We met, maybe there was some attraction, it didn't make sense at the time," Slaver explained in a March 2026 video on their YouTube channel. Agreed Carmack, in a relationship at the time, "You were off-limits for me for a minute."

After they "floated around in the same circles for a year," noted Carmack, they started dating, marrying in 2018, two years after they welcomed daughter Kai. Youngest daughter Cielle joined the band in 2022.

Debbie Allen & Norm Nixon

Since 1984, Debbie Allen has been huddled up with former NBA point guard Norm Nixon. But the pair didn't become instant teammates after meeting on the set of The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh in 1979.

"She went to New York and moved to Fame, and I went back to Los Angeles," the athlete recounted to Trib Total Media. "We stayed in touch, and I realized I had more fun with her than any of the other women I was dating."

As the Debbie Allen Dance Academy founder—who's appeared as world-class urologist and board chairman Catherine Fox since 2011—put it, they're usually in sync.

"I think our relationship has always been born on friendship and commonality in terms of things that we both like," the mom to Vivian, Norman Jr. and Nixon's son DeVaughn told People in 2024, noting they both like "to read books. We both like to go to the movies. We both like to travel. We both love our children."

Decades in, "We've hit some rocks and hit some walls," she acknowledged. "But at the end of the day, we really love each other and we sleep together every night and we love our family."

Harry Shum Jr. & Shelby Rabara

Safe to say Harry Shum Jr.'s first date with now-wife Shelby Rabara was a dream.

"We both cried and it was just such a beautiful experience because after that we just talked about you," he told Jennifer Hudson during a 2022 appearance on her talk show of seeing Dreamgirls. "It really kinda brought us together and we opened up about a lot of things and it was just such a beautiful first date."

Naturally, there was no way they could ever go. The Glee alum (who plays resident Benson Kwan) and the Steven Universe star wed in November 2015, welcoming daughter Xia four years later.

Scott Speedman & Lindsay Rae Hofmann

Transplant surgeon Nick Marsh has proven to be Meredith's person since entering the Grey's universe in 2018. But off-camera it's fiancée Lindsay Rae Hofmann who's stolen his heart.

Engaged since 2023, the Felicity alum and the co-founder of swimwear brand The Juillet welcomed daughter Pfeiffer in 2021 and son Indy in 2024. And she's provided quite the assist to his growing television career.

"She started watching You, and then I ended up on that show," he explained to Esquire in 2021. "She started binge-watching Grey's Anatomy on Netflix during the pandemic, and here I am. Whatever she seems to watch, I seem to end up on."
