Rapper Wiz Khalifa has been found guilty of illegal possession of drugs and sentenced to nine months of prison time in Romania.

On December 18, Wiz Khalifa was sentenced to nine months in prison on charges of "possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption." He was not present during the sentencing.

Khalifa was originally charged in July 2024 after he was found in alleged possession of 18 grams of cannabis. The rapper had just performed at the Beach, Please! festival in Costineti, Romania, and reportedly consumed drugs during the performance, which he conceded to at that time.

According to AFP, Wiz Khalifa has not been held in custody. He has been sentenced to nine months, but is reportedly not in jail at the time of writing. No source reports him being in custody following his sentence.

After he was originally charged, Wiz Khalifa was fined $830 for illegal drug possession by a Constanta County lower court. However, the prosecutors appealed to a higher court for a stronger sentence. The Constanța Court of Appeal overturned the previous verdict to sentence him to jail.

Wiz Khalifa founded his own marijuana brand in 2016 and has often been open about smoking cannabis joints on stage, sharing images of the same. While cannabis is legal in certain US states for recreational and medical use, it is illegal under federal law.

In their verdict delivered on December 18, the Constanta Court of Appeals explained their reason behind overturning the decision against Wiz Khalifa. The court explained that the rapper's actions spread "a message of normalisation of illegal conduct" and promoted "drug use" among the youth.

Further, the statement described Khalifa's act as an "ostentatious act" and blamed him for consuming an "artisanal cigarette" in a youth-focused festival with an audience "predominantly made up of very young people."

The original concert took place on July 13, 2024, when Wiz Khalifa allegedly smoked a joint on stage. The police questioned him for a short while after the concert, with prosecutors charging him with having "risk drugs" for personal recreation.

Khalifa has not yet commented on his latest sentence and verdict overturning. It remains to be seen how the rapper responds, as Romania has some of the strictest laws about drug use in the entirety of Europe.

In a January 2024 interview with Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy, Wiz Khalifa mentioned that smoking weed makes him feel better in terms of his health. The rapper explained:

"I honestly think smoking weed helps my wind a little better. I have breath control and I’m able to take these deep, long breaths that normal people who don’t drag strong marijuana — they don’t experience that."

Khalifa also opened up about going to a parent-teacher meeting while being high. He shares two children with two different women.

"If you lived my life and you weren’t high, you’d be f*cked. Hell yeah, I’m pulling up stoned. They expect it. They know what’s up. It’s not like back in the day where you’re considered a bad parent if you smell like weed. I’m pretty sure my son smells like weed. Like I don’t know because I can’t smell it, but I’m pretty sure he smells like pot," he said.

He added:

"I want them to connect with the real me. They’re not going to get a fake version of me or this made-up parent that society makes you think that you’re supposed to be. I am who I am."

Khalifa was recently spotted performing in California with fellow rapper Gunna. He also shared pictures of the concert on social media.
