Is spear better than sword in Minecraft?

Spear and sword are two melee weapons in Minecraft. While a spear can be crafted using one unit of earth mineral and two sticks, a sword can be crafted using two units of any earth mineral and one stick. Spear is recently being tested in the game and will be added with the Mounts of Mayhem game drop.

However, an argument can be made that the spear is not a better weapon than a sword in Minecraft. Here's why.

Reasons why spear is not better than sword in Minecraft

One of the main reasons why a spear is not better than a sword is that the former's base attack damage is less. The picture shown above shows that a diamond spear's attack damage is 4, while a diamond sword's is 7.

While the stats show that the spear is considerably faster in attacks, its jab attack is still slower than the sword swing. When attacks are tested on mobs, the spear's standard jab attacks are less powerful than the sword's standard swing attacks.

The spear needs enchantments and techniques to be stronger than the sword

To properly use a spear and deal maximum damage, players need to learn and apply certain techniques and enchantments. For example, if they want to take maximum advantage of the spear, they need to use it while traveling fast, like flying with elytra or riding a fast horse. Only then can they use the charge attack and deal a lot more damage than a sword.

Furthermore, the new lunge enchantment can also make a spear more unique than a sword, since it allows players to dash forward using hunger points when performing a jab attack.

On the other hand, the sword remains the stronger and more versatile weapon. Hence, it is still a better weapon than the spear.
