Is Chiefs' Travis Kelce retiring? ESPN analyst drops huge update

9 hours ago 2

Last offseason, the future of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was up in the air.

We didn't know if he would ride off into the sunset with Taylor Swift or keep playing. Travis chose the latter.

But now, another year of wear and tear on his body, the Chiefs are out of the playoffs, and his good friend, Patrick Mahomes, tore his ACL on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, and he will now miss a large chunk of the 2026 season.

So, there is a real thought that Kelce was already nearing the end of his career, but given the events of the past 24 hours, that is now even more on the table.

And according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who was a guest on the Pat McAfee Show, there is a real possibility that Mahomes and Kelce have played their last down together in the NFL.

"We'll see what he ultimately decides at the end of the year," Schefter said. "I think his future is very much up in the air. I think it's distinctly possible that one of the greatest NFL connections of all time, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, may have played their last down together, which is hard to imagine, but that's a real possibility here."

Chiefs' dynasty officially ended in 2025

There's no doubting that the Kansas City Chiefs, as we know them, aren't the same team going forward.

Given the Chiefs' salary cap and the futures of players like Kelce, Chris Jones, and others, there will likely be a lot of personnel turnover in the offseason as well.

It was a great run the Chiefs had, and the 2026 season does feel like a reset for the franchise, and there will be a lot of rumors flying around over the futures of several stars, most notably Kelce.

He's done everything in football and has a thriving life outside of the NFL with Taylor, so if there ever was a time for the future Hall of Famer to call it quits, this feels like the right time.

And Schefter feels it too.
