Interview: Tehani Farr talks breaking into comics as a foreign creator

The Beat got the chance to chat with artist Tehani Farr while on the floor of San Diego Comic Con ‘25. The quick chat covered how Farr started her career in comics and the challenges that foreign creators might have trying to break into the American comic book industry.

Javier Perez: You got started doing art for Magic: The Gathering. How did that start?

Tehani Farr: Pues yo en una Comic Con conocí a Upper Deck, a una directora de Upper Deck, y le gustó mucho mi trabajo, pero ella se pasó a Magic y en cuanto se pasó a Magic, pues me jaló para Magic también. Y así, y muchas de estas cosas pues aquí, o sea, entre contactos, en los after parties, en los parties de networking vas conociendo a personas o te van introduciendo otros, como con los de Heavy Metal, este también fue un evento y amigos míos trabajaban para ellos y les enseñaron mi trabajo y les encantó.

[During a previous Comic Con, I met the director from Upper Deck, and when she began working with Magic: The Gathering, she took me along with her. There are numerous opportunities here to meet people at events or be introduced to them. Like Heavy Metal, that was at an event with some friends of mine who worked with them; they loved my work.]

Perez: How long have you been working in the comics industry? 

Farr: En Internacional, ahorita en San Diego, tres años hago portadas de cómic y trabajando como ilustradora desde hace 12 años.

[Internationally, here in San Diego, three years doing comic covers and twelve years as an illustrator]   

Empecé en México en 2014, fue mi primer evento y mi primer dibujo, o sea que yo no sabía ni siquiera que se podía trabajar de eso. Y pues es echarle un chingo de ganas, o sea, no parar para nada, a nada. Y fue difícil porque, como cinco años aún yo tenía otro trabajo para solventar, e invertí todo lo que ganaba, todo lo invertía adentro para lograr hacerme un buen portafolio.

[I started in Mexico in 2014 that was my first event and first drawing, and i didn’t know and didn’t know i could work doing art. And well, it’s about staying motivated and not stopping for anything. It was difficult because for five years I had to work a separate job to fund my art, and I would reinvest all that money into creating a good portfolio.]  

Y yo me pagaba los viajes a diferentes eventos grandes para que me conocieran más. Y así, poquito a poquito, en cuanto hice mi primera portada aquí en la Comic-Con, fue que conocí a unos amigos ahorita que son de Stranger Comics, con ellos hice mis primeras dos portadas y de ahí empezaron a jalarme de otras personas y de otros y de otros, y así ahorita ya trabajo con medio mundo aquí. 

[I would go to different events so people would recognize my work. Then I made my first cover here at Comic Con, and that’s how I met some friends over at Stranger Comics. I did my first couple of covers for them, which led to working with other people who introduced me to different people, and now I work with half of everyone here.]   

Perez: So, Comic Con is a pretty important event to creators?

Farr: Sí, yo les digo a todos que ahorren y que se vengan entre varios y así, y que no nada más se junten con mexicanos, que la cosa es aventarse a ir y platicar con las personas en inglés, si puedes, y enseñar el trabajo.

[Yes, I tell everyone to save up, and even if you have to split a room, come to SDCC. And don’t just hang out with Spanish speakers. Dive in and engage with people in English, showcase your work.]

Así, o sea, no nada más juntarse entre nosotros, sino ir, scouting, a los eventos, a los networking, y acercarte, e insistirles, porque a veces ese año, ese momento no buscan a alguien, pero si tú tienes muy buen trabajo, con muy buena presentación, van a recordarlo y van a guardar ese trabajo, y a lo mejor en un año, así me pasó, en un año después, me dijeron, oye, te queremos contratar, ahora sí. Y también, a veces, para compañías grandes tienen muchos editores, tú tienes que encontrar el editor o la editora que vea tu trabajo con potencial, y no solamente porque un editor de ese te diga que no, hay muchos, o sea, hay decenas. Entonces, con que encuentres a alguien que vaya con tu trabajo así, que hay que seguirle, hay que seguir y seguir.

[And I mean, don’t stay with the crowd you are used to. Go out and scout at events, network, get close, and persist, because maybe at that moment they might not be looking for someone, but if you have good work, they might be in a year. That’s what happened with me. After a year, they told me, ‘We want to work with you.’ Additionally, these large companies have numerous editors; you need to find the one who sees the potential in your work. And just because one editor says no, that’s ok because there are plenty more. So you have to find the right person and keep pushing.  

Perez: Is there anything else you would like to add?

El próximo año voy a estar en México en la Mole Comicon, así que los veo por ahí. Tengo un chingo de nuevos lanzamientos.
