Insider insists Browns make a move with quarterback Shedeur Sanders

While Dillon Gabriel and the Cleveland Browns prepare to take on the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Shedeur Sanders patiently awaits news on the backup quarterback position.

Since the Browns traded Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals, the backup quarterback spot has been up for grabs between the rookie Sanders and veteran Bailey Zappe.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski has yet to name who it will be in Pittsburgh, but the fact that a player hasn't been named was enough to get one Browns insider riled up.

Browns insider urges team to move on from Shedeur Sanders if they won't make him the backup

Jason Lloyd, a Browns writer for The Athletic, wrote a scathing column calling out Cleveland for their handling of the Sanders situation, especially this week.

"But if Bailey Zappe — Bailey Zappe! — is more trustworthy to a team that has spent 25 years searching for competent quarterback play, then what are we really doing here? Cut Sanders, just as the Philadelphia Eagles did with sixth-round quarterback Kyle McCord and countless other teams do every year with countless other late-round rookie quarterbacks, and end this silly madness," wrote Lloyd.

"McCord returned to Philadelphia on the practice squad. The Browns are protecting Sanders on their 53-man roster so another team can’t pluck him off their practice squad, yet they’re about to promote Zappe from the practice squad ahead of him."

At this point, Lloyd's reasoning is sound. Why carry a quarterback on your roster that you feel isn't NFL-ready, and promote a backup who wasn't even with your team throughout training camp?

If the Browns feel Sanders isn't prepared to back up Gabriel, they should cut him loose and allow him to sign with a team that believes in his abilities and won't bury him on the depth chart.
