The Chiefs got knocked out of the playoffs — ouch — but 1587 Prime, the new restaurant by the team’s most famous players, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, has earned a fabulous reputation in Kansas City.
Part of the hype is owed to the hotspot’s “gatekeepers,” whose job it is to let diners in — whether they have a reputation or not. But the process has an exciting twist for football fans.
“There’s a nightclub vibe there,” says Joyce White, a Kansas City native who recently had dinner there. “Everyone is so nice, but there are gatekeepers to get through first.”
And it’s a multi-step process.
“You have to stand outside behind the ropes, even if you have a reservation,” White says. “Then the first gatekeeper comes out, looks you over, and enters your name. If you say you just want drinks, she pushes you aside. We had no reservations and just showed up early. We schmoozed. She took our name and let us in.”
Sports fans get pumped for the next level of entry.
“Then you walk through a tunnel that mimics the sports tunnel in a stadium,” says White. “Then you stand there, and they look you over again.”
The whole process might sound elite, but laidback Kansas City folks are having a great time with it.
“It is a fun vibe,” White says. “Everyone is giggling and socializing. And once you get in, the servers and manager, if they like you, will get you in again. It’s all very, very fun.”
Once in, expect live entertainment and a “bountiful” menu that's perfect for anyone with pro athlete's appetite. “Many items could be split with your whole entourage,” she says. “The crabcake app included three huge crabcakes — all crab, no filler. The steak was flambéed tableside.”
She sipped on a Patrick Mahomes cocktail (rum, coconut, Coors Light syrup and soda). And yes, Kelce; Kelce’s fiancée, Taylor Swift; Mahomes and Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, all have one, too.
Super-fans will take selfies on the grand staircase where Swift often has her picture taken.
White even scored a run-in with Kelce himself, in the lobby of her boutique hotel next door — a favorite of the restaurant’s corporate partners, Noble 33.
