One of Hollywood’s most durable marriages is moving on to a new chapter — and the house that witnessed it all just hit the market for $10.5 million.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have listed their longtime Mandeville Canyon estate in Los Angeles, a sprawling traditional-style home in Brentwood where the couple spent more than a decade raising their two children.
They purchased the property in 2013 for $6.1 million, a year after the birth of their son. Their daughter followed, and the 7,318-square-foot house became the backdrop of their family’s life.
The couple’s story began in 1997 when they crossed paths on the set of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
Gellar was simultaneously launching what would become her defining role in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” They didn’t start dating until 2000, and married two years later.
More than two decades on, they remain a rarity in a town that chews through marriages like a script. They later shared the screen again in “Scooby-Doo” (2002) and its 2004 sequel.
The house itself bears the stamp of their partnership. Built in 2006 on a third of an acre with rolling lawns, it features five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a book-lined library, a formal dining room and a grand living room anchored by a fireplace.
Listing agent Cindy Ambuehl of Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California said Gellar made it her own from the start.
“Sarah has a phenomenal design eye, so she had her own designers come in to pick out furniture and wallpaper and draperies,” Ambuehl told Mansion Global in an interview.
The couple also left their mark with additions over the years, most notably converting the attic into a game room and teen hangout complete with a gym and a projector.
“They spent a ton of time there,” Ambuehl said. “They’d have movie nights up there, and there’s a gym up there as well.”
Outside, the grounds include an entertainment patio, a barbecue area and a resort-style pool with a waterfall.
Mandeville Canyon, known for its seclusion and celebrity cachet, has attracted the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Harrison Ford, Dr. Dre, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kendrick Lamar.
Ambuehl noted that residents tend to plant roots and stay put.
“The people who live here stay for a long time,” she said. “You’re transported out of LA, and you’re not quite sure where you are. You have rolling hills and massive oaks and sycamores, and there’s only one way in and one way out. You’ll see people on horses, people cycling and people hiking.”
Before putting it on the open market, the couple tested demand by listing the home as a rental at $60,000 a month this past spring, according to Redfin. They have since purchased a newly built home off-market elsewhere in Los Angeles.
“They love the house and loved raising their kids in Mandeville,” Ambuehl said. “It was just time for the next phase of their life.”
