There's nothing quite like the Indianapolis 500, as racing fans worldwide dedicate their focus to the historic 500-mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana.
After beginning in 1911, many things have changed over the first 108 iterations of the event. That will hold true again in 2025 as the race enters its 109th year, with more advancements and developments than ever before.
Among the biggest advancements over the past 114 years is the prize money. The winner of the first-ever Indy 500 received just over half of a $27,550 purse. In present time, winners will receive a healthy fraction of a purse that will be near $20 million.

How much prize money does the Indy 500 winner get in 2025?
- Estimated $4.5-$5.0 million
The winner's prize money has not been announced, but it is estimated to be between $4.5 million and $5 million based on the anticipated increase from last year's prize money of $4.288 million.
As in years past, the winner's prize money depends on several factors, including laps led, sponsorships, and pole winner. Unlike some other major competitions across individual sport, the winner of the Indy 500 does not get a flat percentage of the purse.

What is the Indy 500 purse for 2025?
- Estimated $19.0-$20.0 million
The Indy 500 purse for 2025 has not yet been announced. Based on the anticipated increase from last year's $18.456 million purse, the 2025 purse is estimated to be between $19 million and $20 million.
That would again mark the largest purse in Indy 500 history.
