The Indiana Fever’s biggest stars are currently chasing gold with Team USA, but the franchise made sure two other players received their moment in the spotlight. Monique Billings and Mercedes Russell recently spent an afternoon meeting Fever fans at Indianapolis Chicks in Fishers, Indiana. The two post players signed autographs, posed for photos and shared a meal with those in attendance.
“Good food & good company,” the Fever wrote on Instagram while sharing photos from the event.
It was a relatively simple appearance, but it also offered another example of how the Fever are attempting to maintain their connection with Indianapolis during the WNBA’s break for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston have understandably commanded much of the attention while representing the United States in Berlin. Billings and Russell, however, are among the players who will be needed when Indiana returns to the court for its final regular-season push.
Billings is in her first season with the Fever after previous stops with the Atlanta Dream, Phoenix Mercury and Dallas Wings. She has also regularly used her platform to discuss mental health and the importance of finding confidence away from basketball. Russell is one of the newest members of Indiana’s roster. The 6-foot-6 center joined the Fever during the season and gives coach Stephanie White another experienced option in the frontcourt.
Fever continue building something bigger in Indianapolis
Indiana’s rapid rise has been driven by its success on the court and the extraordinary attention surrounding Clark. Sustaining that momentum, however, requires more than television ratings and sold-out games.
Events such as the one featuring Billings and Russell allow fans to interact with players who do not always receive the largest share of the spotlight. They also help newer members of the roster establish a connection with the city. Both players could have important roles once the season resumes. Billings offers energy, rebounding and defensive versatility, while Russell provides additional size behind Boston.

The Fever’s official roster lists Russell as an eight-year WNBA veteran and Billings as an eight-year veteran, giving Indiana two experienced players for the pressure-filled stretch ahead. Indiana may be without games during the World Cup break, but the organization is not allowing itself to disappear from the community. Billings and Russell helped make sure of that.
