“I thought you were uncomfortable”: Shaq reflects on concern for Tom Brady one year after NFL icon's brutal roast

NBA legend Shaquille O' Neal made a brutal remark about Tom Brady's behavior during "The Roast of Tom Brady," which premiered on Netflix in May 2024. The sports icons sat down for a conversation on "The Big Podcast With Shaq" on Wednesday.

O'Neal asked the legendary quarterback about his feelings while getting roasted by teammates and celebrities.

"I think a lot of people I love being made fun of because when they make fun of you, they know you're comfortable with you," Brady said (Timestamp: 47:28). "They're comfortable with you if they make fun of you. Then you know you're really friends.

"I think people that never make fun of you and everything, oh, it's so behaved. I'm like, 'Man, is this real or not?' Like in a locker room, all you do is make fun of people. I make every joke of (Ron Gronkowski) Gronk and Julian (Edelman) and, you know, everybody."

The four-time NBA champion shared that his assumption of Brady's behavior was one of the reasons he refused to do a similar show.

"See, I thought you were uncomfortable, so I kind of said, you know, maybe I shouldn't do it," O'Neal said. "But because you said you're comfortable, Jeff Ross, haul at me."

Netflix's three-hour "Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady" special aired live on May 5, 2024 at Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Kevin Hart led an all-star roster of comedians, athletes and celebrities who took shots at the football legend.

The panel included roastmaster Jeff Ross, comedians Nikki Glaser, Andrew Schulz, Tony Hinchcliffe, Bert Kreischer, Tom Segura and Sam Jay. Brady's former New England Patriots teammates Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, Drew Bledsoe and Randy Moss also took hilarious digs at him.

Brady's legendary former coach,Bill Belichick, shared a shot with Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Ben Affleck and Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy were the special guests. The seven-time Super Bowl champion hit back at the panel with his jokes.

Tom Brady is a part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, who are tied for the worst record in the league this season at 2-12. Shaquille O'Neal asked the three-time NFL MVP if he could still play at the highest level.

"I'd whoop a** right now," Brady said. "I could go out there and play. Give me a month, I could go play with anybody. I took care of my body great, I mean, I could do it all."

Brady retired for good in 2023 at 45 years old after 23 seasons. He also announced his retirement in 2022 but returned 40 days later for another campaign.
